About My Art

Douglas Gilbert drawing of self portrait

Refuge from technology...

I approach drawing as a primary practice, an art form with its own enduring power and contemporary relevance. My graphite works occupy a space between memory, abstraction, and figuration, evoking images that feel at once familiar and elusive.

What began with landscapes has expanded into a broader exploration of natural and manmade forms. Built from thousands of graphite and charcoal lines, my drawings are less about fixed images than about shifting impressions, what lingers after a moment has passed.

Up close, the marks are restless and layered; from afar, they settle into a vibrating stillness, holding both intensity and quiet presence.

Each drawing is transformative: a journey that begins with intention, unfolds through discovery, and leads to the next.
